transubstantiation: a collaboration
Until March 7

Coming from different generations and cultural backgrounds, S Teddy D and Daniel Flanagan are collaborating together to present their works on Transubstantiation. Although, empirically unchanged, the main idea is about presenting how their artworks interact one to another.
Both artists depict through their
dialogue that a painting is a complex image that can either be simplified or complicated but in the end, it is a small fragment of
the mind of its artist.

an intelligent world: a dual exhibition

In general, the graphic arts – etchings, lithographs and woodcuts – have attracted little interest in Indonesia, whose collectors have long been obsessed with paintings.

This has been changing in recent years, as proven by this exhibition of two Balinese artists, I Made Saryana and Mega Sari, who purposely chose the esoteric and technically challenging art of woodcutting.

sepia, an exhibition by karyana
February 4

Karyana’s penchant for fleeting impressions has recently led him to a moody space that borders on the abstract. While some of his paintings are clearly inspired by the world that surrounds him on his native island of Lombok, others, which more resemble Rorschach tests delve into a mystery that provokes one’s imagination. While careful study may reveal a hidden horse or dancer, these can easily fade back into the whole as if they never existed.

Land of Oysters

it is mid december. mister rain man has started pouring out the buckets of nippy water he has been lining up all year. nevertheless, the rain doesn’t cease the singing, and a gem is found

Too bad”, I think out loud, “to be arriving in cloudy Manado after dark.”
Spears of yellow light crack open the sky every other minute or so and are followed by a deep ominous growl. If there had been a moon, it’d have been covered with ink-stained cotton. The night is wrapped in clouds, yet the frequent flashes of fire uncover a pretty, sleeping forest with white cows guarding its secrets.
The thirty minutes it takes to get to the Kima Bajo Resort & Spa fly by on a magic carpet of stories and making-polite-conversation inquiries.

Kima Bajo literally means oyster village, so I guess you could say I have been summoned to discover its pearl. As does the sparkly gem – one of nature’s most perfect forms – Kima Bajo and the Kima Bajo Resort & Spa both symbolise innocence, purity, perfection, humility, and a retiring character. It warms my insides when I choose to believe my own fictitious tale describing that Kima Bajo, too, is thought to be the result of lightning penetrating the oyster, and therefore regarded as the union of the fecundating forces, fire and water. It so represents birth and rebirth – fertility.

Sulawesi – Indonesia’s fourth largest island – stretches out like a squashed four-legged spider between Kalimantan (Borneo) and the Maluku Islands. The island’s forested mountains and breathtaking underwater world are surpassed only by its fascinating biology. Sulawesi is the largest and most central island of Wallacea (Wallace’s Line) – a unique region that refers to the remarkable change in wildlife that exists east of a figurative line drawn between Bali and Lombok and between Kalimantan and Sulawesi. As a result of the peculiar mix of plants and animals, you’ll find Asian monkeys sharing the forests with Australian cuscus mammals; Babirusa (deer-pig) – with tusks that curl upward through the snout – roam the area; a chicken-sized bird called the Maleo incubates its large eggs in hot volcanic soil; and the tiny teddy bear-like tarsier primate conquers the hearts of many with nothing more than a wide-eyed glance.

Last night’s clouds have given way to a ballet of woolly marshmallows pirouetting around the sun. It is the perfect day for a “tarsier tracking tour” (Rp. 85,000 for a guided trek) at the Tangkoko Nature Reserve in Bitung City – a two-hour drive from the resort – where the world’s smallest primate hides from curious eyes and an extraordinary large concentration of black crested macaques stroll around the woods.

I wonder as I wander out under the silky sky, how on earth the teeny tiny tarsier monkey is to defend itself against major threats. They include habitat loss due to illegal logging and forest conversion, the detrimental use of agricultural pesticides, predation by domestic cats and dogs, and illegal trapping for the pet trade and consumption. Sadly, it is cruelly understandable that the tarsier monkey is regarded as one of the world’s twenty-five most endangered species, as the ogling monkey is just so damn cute and edible.

During your first trip to Sulawesi, you will come to understand that most things can be eaten. Unusual foods such as bats, dogs and rats are sold at the island’s many morning markets where they lay barbecued, on a stick and ready to be devoured – head and all. The mere thought of smelling the blackened animals might make your stomach squeeze into the farthest corner of your abdomen, but no one can dispute it to be incredibly interesting.

Not all Sulawesi specialties involve memories of your precious Fifi, Batman or Stuart Little, though. Bubur Manado (vegetable and rice porridge with hot chillies), Nasi Jaha (sticky rice mixed with red onion and ginger, cooked in bamboo and coconut milk), Saguer (sweet and sour brew obtained from the sugar palm tree’s liquid; low in alcohol), and yummy coconut tarts are typically North Sulawesian and definitely worth a taste.

For now, perhaps most visitors to the four-armed island are looking to discover its mesmerising sea life and coral reefs, and for good reason. Diving possibilities range from the magnificent coral gardens at the Bunaken Marine Park or the Bangka Strait to the walls of multi-coloured fish and underwater volcanoes at the Sangihe Islands to the unusual and rarely seen critters at North Sulawesi’s Lembeh Strait.

North Sulawesi is known to be one of the last frontiers of pristine diving with remote islands and reefs. Not many diving locals, the world over, can outshine the exquisiteness and beauty of Indonesia’s coral jungles. Having never dived before, I have to limit my underwater expedition around Bunaken Island to sun-soaked hours of snorkelling around the boat or cooling dips in the translucent indigo-blue water. I tag along with Eco Divers – one of Manado’s top dive centres, based on the Kima Bajo Resort & Spa’s grounds.

Back on shore – looking out over majestic Mount Manado Tua, Siladen Island, extensive Bunaken Island, Mantehage Island, and the farthest and smallest of the minute island group, Nain Island – the sky licks away the remains of a scenic pink and purple sunset and darkens to a navy blue. After less than an hour it is as if the moon has poked a hole in the melancholic colour and out spills a fountain of tears.

getting there

  1. There is a regular flight service to and from Singapore – with Silk Air – as well as to and from most major cities throughout the Indonesian archipelago. AirAsia offers its direct service between Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, and Manado three times a week. For domestic flights, you can rely on Garuda Airlines.

when to go

  1. During the rainy season (November – February/March), some areas might be harder to get to as a result of floods. Temperatures in North Sulawesi are at their best in July and August.

travel tips

  1. As it is accustomed when travelling to tropical islands, you are in need of a good mosquito repellent, anti-malaria pills, suntan and after-sun lotion, Imodium tablets, a sunhat, a mixture of tolerance and patience, and a friendly smile in order for you to blend in with the local people. Also bring with you a pocketsize Indonesian dictionary, read up on local customs so you are able to avoid embarrassing situations, and learn how to count in Indonesian. Don’t stuff your backpack with beauty products, deodorants, shampoos, toothpastes, etc, from back home! You can find everything you need in Manado, including appropriate clothing and medication.
  2. Watch out where you eat. The rule is: “go where it’s crowded” and if you’re not a fan of dog meat, stay away from “sate” carts with the letters RW written on them.
  3. Buy bottled water, as your stomach might not be comfortable with boiled tap water.
  4. Many divers enjoy underwater photography and wish to cultivate the best possible images or video from their dives. Their enthusiasm can often lead to damaging the environment as they poke critters into a more photogenic position, bend sea fans to better see pigmy seahorses, push framers into sensitive sponges, flash strobes relentlessly at critters who cannot escape, or cause stress through other means. Do follow these simple precautions: Boats should use mooring, NOT anchors!
  5. Guides must take care to avoid other groups on the same site.
  6. If an animal shows signs of stress, divers should leave it alone. Do not chase any creature that is trying to get away.
  7. If divers are harassing any animal, or when they are handling marine life, guides should immediately signal them to stop and lead them away, informing them after the dive that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
  8. If guides are harassing any animal or causing damage, guests should report them to the management.
  9. Guides often want to make guests happy, but there is no situation in which it is acceptable to cause stress or damage just for the sake of a photograph or in order to more easily view marine life.
  10. Visitors should not dive with operators who do not follow these simple rules.

Is Bali Really The Best Island in The World?

plenty of media fora have done their own surveys and came to a conclusion that bali is the best island in the world, but is it really? to welcome the arrival of 2010, we think it’s the perfect time to find out the truth. not because we don’t believe that it is, but because we love bali so much that we want nothing less than reality

how we do it
The number 100 symbolises perfection. And so does 10. Therefore, we have divided our scoring system into ten categories, where the highest score is (obviously) 10, which then will be added up to measure how close Bali is to reach 100 (read: perfection).

To avoid scoring fallacy, we’ve handpicked our survey respondents. They are people who are knowledgeable about Bali, experts in the fields mentioned as categories. They love this island, but they are also fair. So after a qualitative survey, here is the truth about our beloved island:

1.nature and outdoor activities
We think one of the best proofs of the quality of nature here is the amount of animals you see in your house everyday. Lizards, geckos, dogs, snakes, you name it. On top of that, you can also do almost anything outdoors, from mountain hiking, bird watching, parasailing, surfing to riding a camel. It’s the best place to be for those who want to stop wearing shoes and go barefoot all the time. Score: 10

2.music and nightlife
Underground bars. Check. Live music venues. Check. Cocktail bars with amazing sunset views. Check. Performances by famous international DJs. Check. Gay bars. Check. A road-side haunt with the best martinis on this hemisphere. Check. Other watering holes in which you can get completely smashed. Check. But is Bali’s nightlife scene comparable to that of Ibiza? Has the island been consistently producing successful musicians? Yes, it would have been a very good score if it weren’t for those two reasons. But it’s getting better all the time and we are fully aware of this. Therefore, to encourage even more buzz, we come to a decision on a score: 06

3.food and drink
Most people, especially us here at hellobali, have learned that visiting or moving to Bali equals weight gain. What else do you do when it’s hot outside - but eat? Or is that just us? In terms of quantity, there’s no question whether the island has enough restaurants for all of us to eat out at. But in terms of quality, Bali has not yet earned the world status as the island of fine food. Having said that, the street food scene is something to boast about. Still, we reckon that we need more Mozaics and Kemiris please. Score: 07

4.arts and culture
There is no doubt that Bali is the island of artists and artisans. People also come here not merely for the natural wonders, but for the culture. The Balinese are very proud of their culture and rightfully so. Not many places on Planet Earth posses as much charm. So in terms of culture, our beloved island is perfect. But there is an on-going debate about the quality of the art scene. Critics are yearning more variety, which we are confident that Bali can produce. So, for this reason, the score is a little less than perfect: 09

5.social and dating scene
This category basically means: Is it easy to get a date in Bali? No, the ones where you end up paying the next morning don’t count. Apart from Elizabeth Gilbert [author of “Eat, Pray, Love”], how many people have found the love of their life in Bali? Plenty, of course. Look at the rapidly rising number of the local Balinese residents. But for the others, are there potential dates right left and centre? Tourists come here to honeymoon. So unless they are looking for a third partner to swing with, they don’t count. Score: 05

6.living cost
More and more expensive places have started to grow like mushrooms in Bali. We’ve found that sometimes a full-blown night out in Bali costs more than Jakarta. And taxi fares here are indubitably more expensive. But cost of rent, water and electricity are very good. One of our survey respondents claims that they pay as little as Rp. 500,000 for three months worth of electricity. So just like anywhere else in the world, it depends on your lifestyle. But for the average Joe, their pay check can go a long way. Score: 08

7.education
There are at least ten universities in Bali. But in order to be smarter than a fifth grader, most people tend to leave the island. However, for those who want to learn about the Balinese arts and culture, the venues are plentiful. Score: 06

8.health
Singapore is still the destination for anything medical. Bali, unfortunately, doesn’t compare. But for your spiritual health, the island boasts a lot of yoga studios, classes and the kind. And to be fair, you can even go for a chiropractic therapy here. Still, we need a lot more hospitals with international standards. Pharmacies that sell you almost anything without prescriptions are just not enough. Score: 05

9.accommodations
From a semi-wet bed full of bugs, to a room that costs you US$ 1000 a night, Bali has it all. And it’s getting better all the time. The choices are there, and in abundance too. Score: 10

10.environmental awareness
Yuyun Ismawati, one of Time’s Heroes of the Environment 2009 is based in Bali. And more and more eco-friendly properties are being built. There is also a recent trend to use bamboos instead of concrete to build buildings. And the UN Climate Change Conference was also held in Bali. So the island is indeed moving to the right direction in this department. Score: 06

ayana named asia’s leading luxury resort at world travel awards

AYANA Resort and Spa Bali has been awarded Asia’s Leading Luxury Resort in the World Travel Awards 2009, during a Gala Ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House.
Tagged “the Oscars of the travel industry” by The Wall Street Journal, the World Travel Awards acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global tourism and travel industry.
“This is a great honour, to be recognised as Asia’s best luxury resort, especially when you look at the stiff competition around us in today’s luxury market,” said General Manager Charles de Foucault after taking the stage to receive the award. “There is no shortage of beautifully designed or luxuriously-appointed resorts, and the opening of the Rock Bar has put AYANA on the map for every visitor to Bali. But we aim to go beyond the ‘hardware’ of our facilities, to welcome our guests with a unique experience firmly grounded in the warm hospitality, dedicated yet discreet service, and friendliness of our ‘software’, our people.”

Thanksgiving
November 26

Although not a big holiday in Indonesia, but many venues celebrate this day of gratitude (be sure to check out the food talk section in your trusty HelloBali to read about Thanksgiving food events). In America, the holiday is usually celebrated with get-togethers and, the crème de la crème, a succulent turkey dish as a centrepiece.

The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. This year, Thanksgiving Day falls on the 26th of November in the United States, whereas in Canada this fete took place in October.

Flotsam and Jetsam
October 8 - November 2

The sculpture of Balinese artist, Ida Bagus Putu Gede Sutama, mirrors the reality of his home near Sanur Beach. For thousands of years the tides and currents of the Strait of Badung have washed ashore the flotsam and jetsam. As an artist Sutama seeks to transform the mundane into the mysterious with a sparkling smile and enigmatic wink and supplied the villagers with a livelihood tied to the sea and temples. The source of Sutama’s inspiration happens to be one of the most picturesque sights in Sanur, that of the colourful jukung – the triangular sailed outrigger dug-out canoes- that line the beach. Carved in the shape of mythological elephant fish, the same sea, reef and sand imagination that gave birth to these, is like humans, their lives are limited and with time they are lost and broken up and often end up as colourful driftwood on the beach.

The Balinese Writer - Cok Sawitri

Acclaimed Balinese writer, choreographer and director, Cok Sawitri shares a glimpse into her childhood, how she became a writer, and the philosophy behind her incredible works.

Cok SawitriOn Becoming a Writer…
I began writing when I was very young. It was normal because my family were all artists. But I never thought that I was going to be a writer. When I was in primary school I wanted to be an ambassador so that I could travel around the world.
In middle school, I became the editor of my school publication and at times when there were no articles to publish I had no other choice but to write. So, when I got to senior school, I started a publication for students and this experience taught me what it was like to be an editor.

When I was young my family never praised me for my creativity or achievements. It was really hard to get them to clap their hands for me. It wasn't because they didn't care, but because they were artists themselves they thought what I was doing was normal.

One day, I decided to enter into a poetry reading competition. That was the first day I realised I must have been good at something.

I never really studied literature, I studied politics instead. The man who pushed me to write poetry is Pak Umbu Landukarandu. He said to me "Cok, can you send me your poetry". He begged me. I was never confident in myself or about my own poetry, his appreciation helped to encourage me.

On Childhood and Influences…
I don't really have any specific influences. I am really close with all of my family. We are all very close, and get along well. I often think that I am not suitable to be an artist, because I often feel like artists need something inside, like anxiety or deep worries.

I was always really spoiled. So, it is not the artist internal anguish that drives me to write.

My parents where stage performers. I was always at the theatre with them. When I was young there was no such thing as backing noise or tracks, so my mother would pinch me to create the sound of a baby crying. I learned a lot from being around the theatre with them.

My family have never judged people based on what they look like. They always looked at people by who they are, what kind of books they have and if they are kind and caring. I was taught that this was the best way. I used to see interesting people, with different styles such as Rastafarians, long-haired musicians and so on, and think that they were fantastic. They made government workers look so normal. I was taught to see artists as special, because that's what my parents taught me.

On Philosophy and Technique…
What makes me want to write is mostly social. The first time I wrote, I was writing articles. It gave me a background in research. In theatre, I am more experimental. I don't believe that inspiration will drive you, you must use logic. There are no wild people on the stage. Wild is only in your head, you must learn to manage the wildness. If not, no one will want to watch you and your performance won't have any effect.

When I'm on the stage, I always put my priority to the concept. My writing is always linked to religion, but it's not religious. It's social, but with a well-researched reality. There are broader, often political meaning and awareness behind the stories. A lot of the stories I write, are referring to humanity, even if it seems as if I am talking about women.

Like the story about Pembelaan Dirah (Dirah's Defence), it originated from the story of Calon Arang, but I created it as a type of monologue with a four-phase experiment. The concept of my story represents my belief that disharmony is actually harmony. What I try to tell everyone is to look at what's happening on stage as an incident where an innocent woman has become a scapegoat for something that she wasn't responsible for. I wanted to make the audience think objectively, to question why this woman became the scapegoat.

So, within my thoughts, the art, literature, and poetry is not supposed to differentiate between gender. My concepts move beyond gender. They are intended to represent humanity without restricting through gender.

Fascinatingly Alluring "Sanur"

"Sanur Village Festival 2009 reinforces the image of Bali as a safe tourist destination for all visitors." Minister of Tourism and Culture Jero Wacik, in his remarks at the official opening of the annual event.

A kite competition on the Mertasari Beach

The swarm of kites came in different shapes, sizes and hues toss, turn and twist in the sky – blue, clean and clear – to take part in an international competition above Mertasari Beach, Sanur, Bali, creating a fascinating scene to spectators.

On the same beach installation art works stand tall, unmistakable proof that Indonesian contemporary artists are no less impressive than their foreign counterparts in terms of creativity and imagination.

Several meters away eight models – attractive, slender and looking fresh – had just finished their task and strut towards the back of the stage. They gave way to yoga dancers who are set to demonstrate their agility with Indian music in the background.

All that is only the tip of the five-day Sanur Village Festival (SVF August 12-16), an annual celebration of the art and culture, sports "and other activities" in an area covering four hectares.

Several huge attractive white-colored tents encircle the stage to help visitors enjoy a food festival that tantalizes their taste buds.

No program item seemed to have been overlooked by the organizers in order to make SVF an unforgettable event to visitors.

An instalation art on the venue of SVFFrom quadrathon, golf tournament (prizes: two cars and Rp 100 million in cash), fishing and kite competitions, art expo to jazz and pop music performances, fashion show, food festival and photo and cartoon competition and mass yoga (with over 2000 participants)—all that were on hand with a high level of turnout, including five countries, namely China, India, Iran, Japan and Turkey.

"Marine Life is the theme for this year's festival as it reflects the cultural identity and daily lives of Sanur's community," says the chairman of the festival, IB Sidharta Putra.
"Marine Life is also in line with our "Visit Indonesia Year 2009" national campaign that promotes marine, cruise dan MICE."

SVF 2009 is the fourth held since 2006 and is a now already a fixture in Sanur Village's annual tourism program. Previous years saw around 20,000 visitors and participants from several foreign countries enjoy the professionally-prepared event.

"The occupancy rate of hotels and villas in Sanur hit the 80 percent mark, with most visitors coming from Europe and have been here before several times," says Fredina Rebecca, a consultant with TravelWorks, a Sanur-based marketing communications firm.

"They are not affected at all by last month's recent bombings in Jakarta."

The organizers predict that 50,000 people would have visted orang, a nearly 300 percent rise over the past years.

The opening night of SVF.

"It is amazing that a village like Sanur could organize a world-class festival," says Joop Ave, the former minister of tourism, post and telecommunication, in his remarks prior to the official opening of SVF by Minister of Tourism and Culture Jero Wacik.

As usual, Joop spoke also in English (and laced it with tasteful humor) to make sure his message gets across to foreign visitors who flocked to the local culture-driven opening night.
In a tribute to former ministers who had dealt with Indonesia's tourism in the past, the organizers invited Abdul Latief, Marzuki Usman and I Gde Ardhika as guests of honor.

The star of the event's first night was harpist Maya Hasan, who showed up with her group and presented eight of her latest compositions—the dexterity of her fingers was only matched by her physical beauty.

The ensuing evenings saw the Balinese world-class guitar virtuoso Balawan and premier Jakarta-based pianist Dwiki Darmawan on stage, fulfilling the pledge of the organizers to turn SVF into a high-caliber n art feast.

Kain kain BatikBut SVF was not merely about celebration. In a nod to today's norm, which is virtually unbridled freedom of expression, the organizers gave six artists grouped under Linkar Bali the chance to present their concerns over the adverse effect of unchecked tourism development in Sanur.

Their concern is manifested in their art installation works and are practical input not only for tourism industry players in Bali but also elsewhere within the entire country.

SVF was organized by the Sanur Development Foundation, which was set up in 1966 as a forum of ideas from all quarters to promote Sanur's social and business life.

"The Sanur Village Festival was designed to make you relax and enjoy the beach. The world will be able to enjoy exotic Indonsia and the warmth of our hospitality," says Rosari Soendjoto, the PR oficer of SVF 2009.

"Make sure that you do not pass this moment and include it in your future holiday plans."
In view of what had taken place for five days at Mertasari Beach last month, it is almost certain that Rosari's hope would become a reality.

Kites Filled the Sky in Sanur

The Sanur Festival from August 12th – 16th transformed Mertasari Beach into a village of fun filled events and activities focusing on 'Marine Life'. Watching the huge octopus, fish and snakes flying across the Sanur sky, grooving to the jazzy sounds that filled the evening, sneaking a peek at the Visual Arts Programme and the Bonsai Exhibition and taking part in the Mass Yoga and Golf Tournament were activities enjoyed by all who flocked to the festival over this August weekend. Looking forward to the Sanur Festivals' fifth birthday in 2010.T: 0361 286 987, Gotosanur

Nikko Bali Cultural Appreciation Nights

The opening night of the incredible cultural month of cultural appreciation held at Nikko Bali Resort and Spa saw five maestros of Balinese dance perform at Kupu Kupu Amphitheatre on Wednesday, August 5th.

Ni Jero Puspawati took the stage first. She performed the infamous Candra Metu dance with the grace and harmony that made her the star that she is today. While enjoying the variety of rich tasting Balinese cuisine prepared by Nikko Bali's skillful chefs, another Bali maestro, Ni Jero Gadung took the stage with the Wiranatha dance – a beautiful dance telling the story of a warrior's journey.

The never ending applause continued as Gusti Ayu Raka Rasmi performed a cheerful dance of Oleg Temulilingan, followed by a performance by Ni Ketut Arini with her Terunajaya dance, the story of a man's journey into becoming an adult with her unique and dynamic movements. The highlight of the night was the spectacular Kebyar Duduk dance performed by Ida Bagus Oka Wirjana, or famously known as Gus Aji Blangsinga. The mood of the dance was strongly felt from the music and the dancer, who works in close coordination with the entire gamelan to interpret its shifting colour. (Nikko Bali Resort and Spa, Jl. The Red and The White

August 17th heralded the waving of the red and white flag across this beloved land of Indonesia to signal Hari Merdeka (Independence Day). Here in Bali, the Banjars were full of singing – the Indonesian national anthem being the main choice of lyric alongside 'tak gendong, ke mana mana' and other such favourites – and kids were joining in the fun competitions held in each area. Fancy eating krupuk that is tied to a string, or seeing how fast you can drink a carton of Ultra milk. Maybe you can make really great Sambal or balance an egg on a spoon. If these sound like fun, you can always come back next year. Happy Birthday Indonesia, we hope you live a long, happy and prosperous life!

Ayana Gets Intimate

Perched on a rocky 'stage' jutting out from the cliff-face, Third Eye Blind singer Stephan Jenkins rocked the Ayana Rock Bar in an intimate acoustic performance that had everyone smiling with memories of singing along to his songs of old. Jenkins gave a solo performance of tracks from the band's new album 'Ursa Major', their first album in six years. He also granted audience requests to play some of their past hits including 'Deep Inside You' and 'Semi Charmed Life'. Ku De Ta

It is almost assumed these days that there wouldn't be a party season without Ku De Ta at the helm and this August was no exception to that rule. They got the month started with the delivery of the Ku De Ta Republic Passports and then it was all flights to Jalan Laksmana for the sea, the sun and the music. The 7th 'I'm an Angel' Charity Gala Event and party was the first destination. Delta Goodrem sang out into the crowd, a children's choir sang a teary eyed cover of Michael Jackson's 'Heal The World', and an awe inspiring fire swinging dance troop performance that incited everyone to jump up on the stage and feel like they could dance too. The community dug deep into their pockets in the spirit of sharing with their brothers and sisters in need. Auction Success.

Then, the KDT parties continued with their 9th Birthday Bash. We all sang a great big "happy birthday to you" and watched the rockin' fashion parade by Religion – a fantastic East London fashion store that happens to have a shop on Jalan Laksmana – just up the road from KDT. A live dinner performance by Louie Austen, and of course, for the birthday guests a glass of Moët Chandon on arrival was the only drink to celebrate with.

Bikinis Bikinis and more Bikinis - Not an event to have passed up if you were one of those respectable, or not so respectable, guys on the Island of Bali on Sunday, August 16th. It was a colourful day with sun drenched grooves by DJ Jim Breeze and the ever extraordinary B-Boy's Wicked Force Breakers. And, well, yes, lots of bikinis. What's on august...?

Red Carpet Rolls Out

Oberoi Road is really sparkling! We’ve been watching with much anticipation for the opening of Red Carpet Champagne Bar and it’s finally popped its cork in time for the high season. Sponsored by Moet Hennessy, this 80 pax max luxe bar comes with all the five star trappings of a private boutique club. A 20m red carpet from the street rolls through the entire bar past the velvet ropes and Oscar photo-shots on entrance (thankfully not on exit!) so you can take home a Polaroid memento, valet parking by white gloved bell boys clad in red and gold outfits (they even clean your car while you swan around the bar) and glamorous service girls in short red leather minis. The Dutch owners who have had 25yrs in the restaurant, rave and entertainment business have pulled out all stops on this one creating “celebrity credit cards” for each guest to open up their bills with names like Brad and Angelina. A massive Bose sound system pumps fantastic music through the digs and the décor is pure high polished glam – gloss lacquered retro inspired table tops, white leather chairs, gold bar fridges and ironwood bar planks where you perch your derriere as you watch the street parade by.

Rock Star Bar

If you want to get your rocks off this August then head to hills of Jimbaran Bay to the newly opened Rock Bar at Ayana for cocktails that are pretty much served up ‘in the drink!’ This spanking new open top bar sits on rocks above the ocean with fantastic 14 meter high views from above the swirling waves and gorgeous 360 degree ocean views. A DJ booth with outdoor Bose system (hope its waterproof) is flanked by a split-level ironwood platform, long counter tables and dining and lounge spots to whet your whistle from. The Rock Bar is a feat of engineering genius as well as high polished glam design from the creators of world famous NOBU restaurants. It’s a long way to go for a drink; access is via an inclinator, but worth it for the luxury aperitifs, tapas selections and drop dead glam-dram views. Bring your wallet!
